The Toyota Family Literacy Teacher of the Year Award recognizes individual contributions to improving literacy for children and adults.

The winner and several finalists are selected annually by the National Center for Family Literacy to honor educators who demonstrate and impact on families through early childhood education, school-based programs, adult literacy and ESL programs, parenting education, library literacy programs and community literacy programs.

Katy KibbeyAwards:

  • The 2009 Toyota Family Literacy Teacher of the Year will receive a $7,500 award for his/her program and a trip to the 18th Annual National Conference on Family Literacy held in Orlando, Florida, March 1 - 3, 2009.
  • Several finalists will be selected for the 2009 award and each will receive a $500 award.

2009 Guidelines:

  1. Nominations must be submitted online. You will be prompted to create a user name and password so that you may return to your nomination form up until the deadline for submission. Click here to nominate a teacher.
  2. Nominations must be submitted by the program director or coordinator—someone who is familiar with the nominated educator's work with children, adult learners, and the community. Please enter the director's or coordinator's contact information in the first fields on the nomination form (First Name, Last Name, Business Phone and Email).
  3. A statement of support from an adult learner who works directly with the nominated educator must be included on the nomination form. There is space to include the statement in the adult learner's native language, if applicable, but an English translation must also be provided. The adult learner's name must be provided.
  4. Programs may nominate up to two educators, but must submit separate nomination forms online for each nomination.
  5. Programs may nominate an educator who has not been a finalist in the past three years (2006, 2007, 2008).
  6. Any educator who strives to help families improve their literacy skills is eligible.  Educators may primarily teach children's education, adult education, ESL, parenting education, and/or other educational services provided to families. Nominations should emphasize how the educator supports intergenerational learning.
  7. Nominating programs may be publicly or privately funded (or a combination) and may serve families through community-based sites, school-based sites, libraries, or other service settings.
  8. If selected as a finalist, the nominated educator and/or program director or coordinator may be interviewed by phone during the final selection process.
  9. Nominations will be accepted through December 5, 2008.
