"Newspapers Give Knowledge and Guidance"
In celebration of International Literacy Day (September 8), the National Center for Family Literacy has teamed up with the Newspaper Association of America Foundation to produce the 2007 International Literacy Day Tabloid.

Newspapers may order the resource on CD through the Newspaper Association of America Foundation (www.naafoundation.org/foundation/LitTab07/).
Written by NCFL, the Tabloid is produced by the NAAF with support from Idearc Media Corp., home to Superpages.com and publisher of Verizon Yellow Pages. The Tabloid features easy-to-read articles, activities and games for parents to engage their child in reading using the newspaper. There are also resources for adult learners looking to improve their literacy skills.
How can the Literacy Tabloid help your program?
The Tabloid is designed so that newspapers can insert customized information of interest to the community. By working with your local newspaper, you can raise awareness about your program, reach out to students, honor local partners, and reach new sponsors.
Encourage your newspaper to take advantage of the Tabloid with these simple steps:
-
Call your newspaper and ask for the Newspapers in Education (NIE) department or ask for the education reporter or editor.
-
Explain that "The International Literacy Day Tabloid" is a professionally designed supplement available at no cost through the Newspaper Association of America Foundation and is funded by Idearc. Your newspaper can show its support of literacy by donating the printing costs.
-
Let your local paper know the Tabloid is full of useful articles and activities for parents and children to improve their literacy skills and that the Tabloid is produced in celebration of International Literacy Day (September 8).
-
Offer to provide local literacy statistics, your program contact information and story ideas to make this resource even more useful to your newspaper's community.
