Thinkfinity Literacy Network

New Tool to Guide Professional Development

The Verizon Literacy Program Self-Assessment Tool (VLP-SAT) is a free, interactive and in-depth survey developed by the National Center for Family Literacy and available free through Thinkfinity Literacy Network on Thinkfinity.org. This new, versatile tool provides standards, indicators and criteria for best practices for programs that serve students across the life span.

The instrument, which debuted at the National Literacy Summit in October, 2007, offers research-based strategies proven to bring about literacy outcomes for young children, elementary school-age children, adolescent students, and adult learners. Each module of the program self-assessment may be used independently or in combination for multigenerational programs.

Thinkfinity Literacy Network (TLN), the former Verizon Literacy Network, is now part of Thinkfinity.org.

Thinkfinity.org is a powerful educational platform created through the merger of two highly-acclaimed programs – the Verizon Literacy Network and Verizon MarcoPolo.  In this combined resource, visitors can access more than 55,000 free standards- and research-based educational resources, and comprehensive professional development for adult and family literacy practitioners, K-12 teachers and volunteers.

The TLN, which features content specific to the adult and family literacy communities, offers:

  • More than 40 online courses for literacy instructors, community-based organizations, students and volunteers
  • Exclusive best practices like the Verizon Life Span Literacy Matrix and the Verizon Literacy Program Self Assessment Tool (VLP-SAT), developed by the National Center for Family Literacy
  • Activities and instruction for English language learners and ESL instructors
  • Exclusive model programs like those honored by the Verizon Tech Savvy Awards, the first national award to recognize programs that demystify technology for parents, enabling them to better guide their children in the use of new media
  • How-to instruction for program managers on topics like program development, volunteer recruiting and community engagement
  • A searchable database of hundreds of literacy organizations in need of volunteers
  • Studies, research and statistics highlighting the importance of literacy development across the life span

The TLN features content specific to the adult and family literacy communities.  It offers teachers, volunteers, parents, community groups, adult students and program administrators free online courses, best practices, program assessment tools, teaching and learning tools, model programs that demystify technology for parents, and abundant research highlighting the importance of literacy development across the life span.  All TLN content is free and is developed and approved by leading literacy experts like the American Library Association, National Center for Family Literacy and ProLiteracy Worldwide.  For more information, visit www.thinkfinity.org, and click on Thinkfinity Literacy Network.
