The Kentucky Institute for Family Literacy is a collaborative organization launched in October 2000 with funding from a federal Statewide Family Literacy Initiative grant, state matching funds and private donations.
Purpose
To improve literacy of Kentuckians across the lifespan by

Creating awareness of literacy issues.

Working with communities, educational organizations and policy makers to increase access to high quality literacy services.

Providing resources for partners, parents and families to improve literacy.
Accomplishments

Coordination with state agencies and family literacy partners resulting in expansion of family literacy programs to all 120 Kentucky counties.

Design and distribution of Kentucky Family Literacy Recruitment Toolkit.

Development and distribution of Family Reading Backpacks to 152 Kentucky family literacy programs.

Set up and maintenance of 2,200-volume Family Literacy Resource Center.

Technical support for family literacy component in Kentucky Reading First grants.
Current Activities

Statewide training and technical assistance to 120 state-funded family literacy programs under contract to Kentucky Adult Education, Council on Postsecondary Education.

Technical Assistance for 16 federally funded Even Start family literacy programs under contract with Kentucky Department of Education.

Participation in Success By Six Book Harvest and Every 1 Reads, Louisville early childhood and literacy initiatives.
