Working in Kentucky

Kentucky Institute for Family Literacy

Welcome to the Web site of the Kentucky Institute for Family Literacy (KIFL), an initiative of the National Center for Family Literacy focused on improving the literacy of Kentuckians across the lifespan through professional development, awareness, resource development and partnerships.

Literacy in Kentucky—The Problem

According to the 2003 Kentucky State Assessment of Adult Literacy, only 11 percent of Kentucky adults are proficient in prose literacy. In the 2004 American Community Survey of the U.S. Census, Kentucky ranked 50th out of 51 states and districts in the percentage of adults over 25 with a high school diploma or GED, and 48th in the percentage of adults with baccalaureate degree or higher.

The need for literacy resources is great, and the Kentucky Institute for Family Literacy has worked with statewide partners since 2000 to increase access to literacy services in the Commonwealth.
