The Toyota Family Literacy Program (TFLP) has found a new home, in NCFL’s hometown of Louisville, Kentucky. Louisville is now one of thirty cities nationwide to offer this revolutionary program. TFLP increases basic language and literacy skills among Hispanic and other immigrant families, and provides parents with the skills they need to help their children succeed in school. It specifically serves children in kindergarten to third grade and their parents.
This morning Klondike Elementary School hosted the grant announcement press event and celebration. TFLP parent Carolina Hernandez, who participates in the program at Rangeland Elementary School, spoke to the crowd of public officials, educators, and fellow parents. “I am more independent in my daily life,” she said. “When I first arrived here, I would have to pay translators to help me understand basic things. Now, I can save my money and figure it out on my own. I thank the Toyota Family Literacy Program so much for helping me to reach my goals.”
126 school districts applied for this TFLP grant, and Jefferson County Public Schools was one of only 5 winners. Congratulations!
