Everado (Lalo) Macias
Everado (Lalo) Macias, student speaker at the 2010 National Conference on Family Literacy in San Antonio, was born in the small pueblo of Pihuamo in Jalisco, Mexico — the fourth of five boys. He attended school through the sixth grade and then went to work at various jobs in construction and cooking. His three older brothers were in the United States, so at age 20, he decided to move to the United States as well. He continued working in construction and the restaurant business, becoming a cook in a local restaurant in Boulder, CO, where he helps other immigrants learn the language and the work routine.
He is married and is the father of two young boys — Armando and Angelito. Lalo describes himself as a traditional Mexican immigrant who has come to embrace nontraditional values. After two years in the Boulder Valley Family Literacy Program, Lalo planned to go to technical school to begin a new career in mechanics. He planned to take his first GED test in mathematics, after transitioning from the ESL class in 2009.
